Announcing the move at the MeeGo conference in Dublin, AMD said that it would provide "operational resources" to the open source project to make the operating system compatible with its accelerated processing units APUs.
The MeeGo project aims to developing an industry standard open source mobile and netbook operating system based on Intel's Moblin mobile OS and Nokia's Maemo operating system.
Although the MeeGo OS has not yet been released into the market, LG's upcoming GW990 handset has been named as the first smartphone to run the operating system.
The project, which is supported by The Linux Foundation, aims to ship the first Nokia MeeGo-based smartphone by early 2011.
With the move, AMD will be looking to expand the number of platforms supported by its Fusion range of APUs. Being a gold member of the Linux Foundation, AMD could play a critical role in the development of MeeGo.
Ben Bar-Haim, corporate vice president, software development, AMD said: “We are glad to provide engineering resources to joint industry efforts like MeeGo and expect that this operating system will help drive our embedded plans and create expanded market opportunities for our forthcoming Accelerated Processing Units.
